Being influenced by her friends to skateboard, junior Cyerra Dixon decided to pick up the activity, but found much more. Dixon believes that not only is skateboarding an amusing hobby outside of school, but also a great way to connect with peers and inspire yourself to improve.
Learning in and out of school isn’t anything new for her. According to Dixon, you can learn about your surroundings, the people around you and how to value your time when it comes to skateboarding.
“I think that with skateboarding I learn a bunch of things about other people and it helps you,” Dixon said. “Skating kind of teaches you to never give up on stuff because it takes a lot of time to learn new things.”
Gaining a whole new perspective, Dixon explains how going to summer camp helped her learn new facts about the skateboard community.
“When I went to camp this summer I met a bunch of different people from different places, different countries, and they would talk about themselves,” Dixon said.
Continuing this teaching cycle, Dixon encourages those interested in her beloved hobby to stick through the bumpy beginning.
“I would say that when you first start it’s pretty hard,” Dixon said. “But you should never give up on it because as long as you put in that time you’ll learn a bunch and you’ll progress.”
Although she isn’t a beginner anymore, Dixon still sees room for improvement in her practice and is motivated to work on her struggle areas by creating purpose to why she skates.
“I have a lot of goals set for the end of this year,” Dixon said. “I want to get board slides better, which is a trick on a rail. It’s like a simple trick and then after I start with smaller rails, I want to do bigger ones.”
