Hi! My name is Mia and I am a junior at Grosse Pointe North High School. This will be my third year in journalism and my second year being an editor. Last year I was the Editorial editor, editing pages four and five and now I am the News editor editing pages two and three. My goal for this year is to make the news more interactive while still keeping it professional and not magazine-like. Outside of journalism I am a part of two clubs, Students Demand Action and Link Crew. When I’m not in school I enjoy hanging out with my friends with a Starbucks drink in hand. I am so excited to see where the 2024-25 North Pointe year takes us!

NEW HORIZONS| Gaining exposure to a variety of colleges can significantly impact students' educational choices and future opportunities. South counselor Jennifer Vick underscores the importance of this exposure in broadening students’ future. “I think it's great because you just get some face time and exposure to a lot of different schools,” Said Jennifer Vick. “I always feel like sometimes kids just don't have the chance to see schools. You see the big schools that are playing on TV, or if your parents or siblings go to a school, maybe you have been to a particular campus, but it's kind of limited. There are so many different kinds of schools, and different sizes and different programs. I feel like that's kind of a nice entry point because it's the first exposure a lot of kids have to different schools they have never heard of.”

ECOLOGICAL EFFICIENCY | The goal for co-owners of the Refill Emporium, Shannon Sweetwood and Whitney Wagner, was to create a space where the community can shop sustainably. “We live in an age with unnecessary packaging,”Sweetwood and Wagner said. “At Refill Emporium we use as little packaging as possible and currently carry over 70 refillable products.”

MORE THAN BAGELS| Bagel loving sophomore, Ethan Clark, just joined KNOTS. Clark enjoys catching up with friends and teachers during the club meetings. Clark also got to know the organizers through the breakfast. “The teachers were telling everyone who they were and having a great time,” Clark said.

TIED TOGETHER| Since her freshman year, Senior Katherine Listman has been involved with KNOTS. Listman enjoys the KNOTS breakfast every year but this year was different. “It was the first breakfast in a long time where we were able to see our KNOTS without masks, and where we had that great of a turnout of new members,” Listman said.

GOOD VIBES EVERYWHERE| School psychologist Christine Kuhl is no stranger to KNOTS. Having coordinated KNOTS for ten years, Kuhl has been through it all. “The breakfast is always my favorite activity, because it's really good vibes [and] everyone is happy to be there,” Kuhl said.

BREAKFAST OF LAUGHS| Assistant Principal Katy Vernier stopped by the KNOTS breakfast in the cafeteria. Vernier believes KNOTS, especially through events such as the breakfast, allows students to make once-in-a-lifetime connections. “I always love it when it gets really loud in there, because the kids are all talking or interacting with each other or laughing. You hear laughter all over the place,” Vernier said.

BACK TO NORMAL| Along with Christine Kuhl and Kelly Osborne, special education teacher Sheila Doss co-chairs and organizes KNOTS. The pandemic affected the club’s numbers greatly, and Doss notes the attendance has finally reached pre-pandemic norms. “We’re back to where we were before the pandemic,” Doss said. “Which is kind of a milestone for everybody.”

T-SHIRTS AND CONNECTION| Special Education Teacher Rene Ciaramitaro passed out t-shirts to new KNOTS members during the breakfast. Ciaramitaro appreciates the connection the KNOTS breakfast creates between students. “I loved seeing all of the students interact with one another,” Ciaramitaro said. “My students were really excited and enjoyed themselves.”
