Syd’s debut solo album makes waves
February 6, 2017
Syd, lead singer in The Internet, released her debut solo album “Fin.” The sound of the album can be described as a mixture of ‘90s R&B, taking inspiration from artist such as Aaliyah, yet it’s still modern enough for today’s listeners.
Syd, short for Syd Tha Kyd, started off her career in the alternative music group Odd Future with artists such as Tyler, the Creator, Frank Ocean and Earl Sweatshirt. Syd served as the group’s in-house engineer. However, she quickly blossomed into much more. The Internet was started, a neo-soul band with an indescribable (in a good way) sound. Syd is the lead vocalist in the group.
Songs such as “Special Affair” and “Girl” are stand outs for the band. The component that creates the smooth yet funky sound, is Syd’s calming voice. Just enough rasp to keep you on your toes, yet stable enough to keep you interested. “Ego Death,” the third studio album, was also nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2016 Grammys.
“Fin” can be categorized in one word: balanced. The tranquility of her voice counters the “metro boomin’”-esque beats, creating a perfect oxymoron. Songs such as “No Complaints,” “All About Me,” and “Dollar Bills” can be used for those late night jam sessions with friends, while songs like “Body,” “Drown In It,” and “Smile More” reveal the sensual side of the album. Balance is the word of choice because Syd gives a taste of everything in this album: pitchy but sultry vocals, attention-grabbing beats and a retrograded feel. Everything fans of The Internet’s lead singer could ask for in her debut solo album.
The one feature of the album is done by the up-and-coming Atlanta based rapper 6LACK on the song “Over.” His verse fits in with the low key theme of the album. He raps about being involved in a relationship he had no interest in the first place.
Syd showed that she is much more than just a lead vocalist of a band in the album. She is an individual. Syd takes inspiration from all aspects of the industry and made it into her own, which is what all artist should strive for. Artists should create their own sound that still appeals to the majority, and Syd does exactly that in “Fin.”
With “Fin,” Syd continues to make waves in the music industry.
