Boys ice hockey with Matthew Lorelli
Over the last four years, the boys’ varsity ice hockey team at North has encountered many losses stemming from a consistently minimal player count. Despite the challenges of sustaining competitiveness and the emotional toll on team morale, senior captain Matthew Lorelli underscores the teams’ unwavering determination and persistent mindset.
With a small number of participants and many players who are young or have little experience, Lorelli recognizes many repercussions the small roster has imposed on their collective experience.
“Some ups are that we don’t quit and don’t give up and some downs are that we are just a young team and have a short bench,” Lorelli said.
Despite holding a current record of 1-10, the team remains resilient, refusing to surrender hope in the face of their losses. On Dec. 7, the team beat Brownstown Woodhaven 5-4 in overtime and Lorelli acknowledges the strong team effort that contributed to the victory.
“It was a team win and everyone stepped up and did their role,” Lorelli said.
Girls competitive cheer with Nariah Morris
Tumbling, stunting, pyramids, dance and cheer skills are all key aspects of being a part of North’s competitive cheer team. A junior flyer on both sideline and competitive cheer teams, Nariah Morris’s most favorite part of competing is putting in her best effort and trying to win championships.
Recognizing the team’s adjustments in technique, Morris emphasizes the ongoing enhancement in performance throughout her time with the squad.
“Within those years we’ve stepped up our game, changed some cheers and have been doing stronger stunts,” Morris said.
With their sights set on the year ahead, Morris expresses that the team aims to achieve cheer competition victories and bring school pride to North.
“The team’s goals this year will be to bring home some cheer competition wins and to make our school proud,” Morris said.
