Boys varsity swim with James Gusmano
As the varsity boys swim team begins their season, junior James Gusmano has taken his preparations seriously, expecting good results. Through his leadership position, Gusmano continues to help the team to grow by being a good role model and team captain. After being an All-State swimmer last year, Gusmano sets a good example and plans to go All-State in two events this upcoming season.
Varsity boys swim is moving on from losing many seniors last year. They plan to stay motivated and push for an even better season after the loss of many good swimmers. The boys have been practicing their skills in preparation for this season.
“A lot of the swimmers are practicing off season, and doing club swimming things,” Gusmano said.
With the season coming to a start, Gusmano is dedicated to keeping his teams’ energy at the best it can be. Additionally, his plan is to bring himself and his teammates to all-state events throughout the year.
“I’m going to make sure the team dynamic is in good shape and just getting better and better everyday,” Gusmano said.
Girls varsity competitive cheerleading with Maressa Fielder
As tryouts come to a close, junior Maressa Fielder thinks the team can generate even more interest next year if the school mentions it on social media. Competitive cheer is moving on from the departure of last year’s coach, Lauren Hughes, but is happy to welcome the return of their previous coach, Kristina Kaiser.
With the season ramping up this winter, their practice is focused around setting goals, learning new skills and having a successful year, especially against Grosse Pointe South.
“To get first and place in all the rounds and get more skills,” Fielder said.
As the competitive cheer season begins, the team is ready to hit the ground running. Once tryouts are out of the way, Fielder believes the team will be stronger than ever.
“We haven’t really prepared yet because we just did the tryouts,” Fielder said. “But I’m sure we’re going to do flips and stuff in practice and stuff and in all the rounds.”
