Board of Education members elected new officers on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Each trustee was able to nominate a candidate and vote to confirm or deny nominations.

After serving the past two years as president and winning her campaign in the fall, Judy Gafa was voted treasurer. Replacing her as president is former treasurer Brian Summerfield. In a Facebook account on her School Board Facebook account, she offered a short congratulatory post that also touched on the other topics discussed at the meeting.

“I want to congratulate Brian Summerfield and wish him continued success as he is the new Board president,” she said in the post.

Trustee Margaret Weertz was confirmed vice president, filling the vacancy after former vice president Dan Roeske chose not to seek reelection. Secretary Cindy Pangborn was also confirmed as secretary for another year.

On his School Board Facebook page, Summerfield thanked the Board for choosing him to serve as president. He said he is excited to see what the Board will accomplish in the upcoming year.

“I want to thank my Board colleagues for choosing me to be president at our meeting last night,” he said in a post. “It is a privilege to serve the community in this capacity, and I look forward to the great things that the district will accomplish.”

Besides selecting officers, the Board approved a renovation project at South High School, and Dr. Gary Niehaus, superintendent of schools, shared the results of the Michigan Department of Education’s blue ribbon and reward schools search.
