Changes to the 2023-2024 academic calendar have shortened the school year for seniors by one week, as announced by GPPSS on Dec. 6. According to the email, the seniors’ last day will now be May 24 and their exams will take place on May 21, 22, 23 and 24.
Expressing mixed emotions about the calendar change, senior Michael LoPorto is excited for an early release while also acknowledging that this change creates a limited time to prepare for final exams.
“I’m happy about the change and excited for an early summer vacation,” LoPorto said. “The downside is that I have AP exams the first week of May, and only get one recovery week before finals. Prom is that Saturday before [the] seniors’ last week so not much studying can be done that weekend.”
Despite the tight schedule for seniors, this change is intended to guarantee that there is enough time to verify that seniors have completed all graduation requirements, as stated in an email distributed by the district.
“This adjustment has been made to ensure that there is time for a comprehensive credit audit prior to graduation,” GPPSS Communications said.
