After an action-packed winter premiere of  “Riverdale,” viewers will come back for more. It premiered Jan. 17 on the CW network and introduced the audience to a new character and went further into the drama that has been happening all season.

After the reveal of the Black Hood, the season’s main antagonist, the mayor shuts down Southside High. This causes all the Serpent Gang members to transfer to Riverdale High, something Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) and Reggie Mantle (Ross Butler) don’t agree with. Instead  of trying to kick the new students out, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) welcomes the Southsiders. This new rivalry adds an exciting twist to the episode.

While Veronica argues with Cheryl and Reggie, Veronica’s boyfriend, Archie Andrews (K.J. Apa), is approached by the FBI. Archie is tasked with finding out what Veronica’s parents, Hermione and Hiram Lodge, are doing. Although he declines to help, he has an urge to discover what the Lodges are doing even if it means keeping his mission a secret from Veronica. Archie battles this dilemma during the episode.

After 13 episodes, the audience meets Betty Cooper’s (Lili Reinhart) long-lost brother. Betty travels to a motel two towns over with her mom to find her brother, Charles “Chic” Cooper (Hart Denton). When Betty and her mom meet Chic, it’s obvious he doesn’t want to be involved with them. He’s a shady character and even stands over Betty’s bed at the end of the episode.

Throughout the season, Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) becomes a darker character. After becoming a Serpent, Jughead becomes more level headed and confident in himself. For example, the principal doesn’t allow gang jackets to be worn but Jughead doesn’t take off his jacket and is suspended.

The added drama to this season may make one want to watch it more compared to last season. Last season was more of an introduction to the show overall, however this season  is much more eventful and allows viewers to see the complexity of characters.

This drama-packed episode foreshadows a shocking ending. Overall, the series is worth watching.
