Boys varsity baseball with Caleb Butler
Coming off a deep postseason run in 2024, the boys varsity baseball team has a lot to look forward to this season. However, with former head coach Kevin Shubnell stepping down and Phil Kozlowski taking over, the team’s identity under the new leadership remains uncertain. Despite the uncertainty, the team has a lot of passion for this upcoming season.
Junior captain and returning varsity player Caleb Butler emphasizes that pre-season training is very important for success and is not an easy process.
“We have workouts every week and we are focusing on batting, fielding and pitching in practice,” Butler said. “We mainly focus on fielding so we should make little to no errors on the field.”
Beyond just preparing for the season, going out and competing is just as critical to the team’s success. Despite the change in coaching, Butler makes it clear that the team is determined to prove themselves.
“We can compete with anyone, no matter the coach, field or any circumstance,” Butler said. “We are going to fight, battle, compete, win, and we will be a competitive baseball team.”
Girls varsity soccer with Leah Burney
Following a state championship win in 2023 and a successful season in 2024, the girls soccer team is looking to carry their momentum from the past two years into this upcoming season.
With the loss of six graduated seniors, junior captain Leah Burney wants to lead her team throughout the season. Her goal is to build the younger players up for the next few years by ensuring they are working hard each practice.
“I guess just encouraging them, words of encouragement and making sure everyone is working their hardest at practices,” Burney said.
Burney wants to build the team’s work ethic and chemistry together, but believes it doesn’t come easily. Burney emphasizes that the girls are well prepared and ready for the upcoming season.
“We do a lot of conditioning after school and now we’re just preparing for tryouts and making sure everyone’s in shape,” Burney said.
