Transgender students afforded bathroom of choice in public schools
President Obama and his administration called for public schools to allow students to use the bathroom that matches the gender they identify with. Obama’s letter references Title IX, which says that no medical diagnosis or documentation should be given to protect transgender students. It was signed by officials from the Department of Justice and Education. Failure to comply with this legislation can lead to a loss in federal funds. To learn more on this topic, click here.

Dominican Republican president wins record election
Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina extended the Dominican Liberation party’s rule until 2020. His party has been in office for 12 years while he holds approximately 62 percent of more than half of the votes counted from Sunday. His opponent, Luis Abinader, earned 35 percent of votes. If the 62 percent lead remains, it will be the highest percentage for a Dominican president to ever have. To read more about Median, visit this link here.

Mississippi school district is ordered to desegregate after 50 years
The Cleveland, Mississippi, school district is being ordered by the federal court to merge its secondary schools with a majority of black students to merge with those with white majorities. The Justice Department said, in a statement, that the only way to stop segregation was to combine Cleveland’s middle and high schools. The mostly black D.M. Smith Middle School will be combined with the predominantly white Margaret Green Junior High School. Read more here.

Key primaries for Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders in Kentucky and Oregon
Clinton is expected to win Kentucky after losing recent primaries to Sander. But the potential for a sweep is opposed by Sanders, who’s expected to win Oregon. To date, estimated delegates for Clinton comes in at close to 2,250 while Sanders is estimated to have close to 1,500. Both candidates are fighting for the Democratic nomination in November. Former Tiger infielder passes away
Dick McAuliffe was an infielder for the 1968 World Champion Detroit Tigers. He passed away on Friday, and the Tigers held a moment of silence for him before Monday’s game. McAuliffe is known for his toughness and especially for his notorious fight with Tommy John, where he ended up getting fined $250 and suspended for five days. He was signed as a free agent by the Tigers in 1957 and made his debut in 1960. To read more about this three time all-star, click here.
