Standing out from many other high school students, junior Wesley Ramsey has pursued baking bread as one of his main hobbies. Ramsey picked up on the hobby two years ago and since then his passion for baking has only gained momentum. What began as a pastime for Ramsey has now turned into a business where anyone can purchase any type of loaf for just $7.
Discovering his passion for baking was not a surprise for Ramsey as he has been surrounded by a baking environment ever since he can remember. Having grown up watching his mom in the kitchen, he continues the baking legacy in the Ramsey family.
“I’ve always been around it, my mom is a big baker and I really enjoy it,” Ramsey said. “It’s something that’s calming, it’s fun, I’m good at it [and] I like doing it.”
Although the task of making bread may seem easy to most people, according to Ramsey, bread making requires many steps and patience. Baking mainly sourdough, but also many other kinds of bread including focaccia, ciabatta, baguettes and many more Ramsey explains that the process can be complicated.
“It’s kind of stressful though, it’s easy to kind of get overwhelmed, because a lot of things can go wrong,” Ramsey said.
Ramsey recently transitioned from making bread for fun to now selling his bread, due to the rising costs of his hobby. By charging customers he is able to provide a higher quality product in return.
“I just recently started selling bread just because it’s a hobby that costs money,” Ramsey said. “I want to be able to get the equipment that I need and the materials. I thought it would be a good thing to do.”
Aside from making his hobby into a business, Ramsey enjoys being able to use his passion as something that not only benefits himself, but others.
“It’s something I enjoy doing but also I like making stuff for my family because I just like giving things to people,” Ramsey said. “It’s just a nice thing to do.”
