On Feb. 4, senior Isabelle Nguyen, member of the Grosse Pointe United Gymnastics team, won the Division I all-around gold medal and placed top 10 in all events at the Canton High School Invitational.
“I was really happy. I actually didn’t expect to get first on all-around ‘cause I placed decent on the other event,” Nguyen said.
She did the vault, bars, beam and floor events and received five medals total.
Although Nguyen won’t participate in gymnastics in college because of her injuries, she plans to help coach at the high school level.
“I might want to come back and coach the high school girls, but I don’t think I’ll be actively doing it,” Nguyen said. “It just makes me happy to watch other girls do gymnastics, something that I like watching them do (and) something that they like just makes me happy to want to help them.”
Although Nguyen has numerous injuries, her family continues to motivate her. She said she wouldn’t be the same if it weren’t for gymnastics.
“I probably wouldn’t be as tough and strong as I am today if I wasn’t doing it,” she said. “I probably wouldn’t have met everyone, made so many friends.”
