The Book Thief
B-
The Book Thief is a movie based on the best-selling book by the same name. The Book Thief tells the story of a young girl, Liesel, who is separated from her mother to go live with a foster family in in Germany during World War II. In addition to losing her mother, Liesel watched as her brother was taken from her side.
Watching Liesel’s family get separated is one of the many heart-wrenching scenes included in the movie. The emotion involved with the scenes was very realistic and made the reader feel attached to the characters.
After Liesel was sent to live with her foster family, her new parents encouraged her to read and explore books. As she learns to read she discovers a whole other world that is better than the wartime reality she is living. Reading becomes her only escape from the violence and tragedy that came with the Holocaust, which was taking place outside her foster family’s home.
Her foster family was harboring a Jewish refugee named Max Vandenburg. Liesel befriends Max, who further encourages her reading and creativity. It was amazing to watch how a simple hobby made Liesel’s life happier and shifted her reality.
This movie was not only inspiring but it makes the viewer feel like he/she was really there during the Holocaust, one of the hardest, most violent times the world has ever seen. This movie tells an amazing story about strength, the power of imagination and hope and captured the viewer’s attention throughout.
