The sound of the cleats scraping turf breaks the brief hush of anticipation as sophomore and varsity football player Ben Savich drives his foot into the ball. It spins through the crisp fall air, landing perfectly between the uprights.
For Savich, moments like these capture his growing passion for a sport he has been surrounded by his entire life. Despite only playing competitively for a year, football has quickly become a major part of who he is.
“Since I was four years old, I’ve been playing with a ball, but I only started playing football a year ago,” Savich said. “What I enjoy most about it is the adrenaline with every kick and the encouragement I receive from my teammates and coaches.”
Football is not just Savich’s passion — it is a part of his family story. Following in the footsteps of his father and uncle, who both held huge accomplishments on the field, Savich draws inspiration from them as he works toward his own dream of playing professionally.
“I have always been into sports, and my dad and great uncle were a big help in getting me into football,” Savich said. “Both were kickers at the Division 1 level, starting all four years at Central Michigan, which eventually led to my Dad being picked up by the SteamWheelers in the Professional Indoor Football League and my great-uncle being picked up by the Green Bay Packers in the National Football League.”
Despite being a sophomore, Savich has already made his mark — setting the school record with a 53-yard field goal and earning recognition as a top-20 prospect for 2028.
“This summer, I was invited to the Underclassmen Invitational in Chicago, where I finished 3rd among 60 top-rated athletes in the country,” Savich said. “I earned this invite through the numerous hours I put in throughout the span of the year and the skills I developed during the training.”
In addition to football’s necessity for dedication and diligence, Savich describes the ways one can stand out as a player and ensure their teammates’ success.
“Being a good teammate can take different forms, some individuals excel on the field and help create opportunities for me to perform well, while others encourage the field, celebrating a big win or even a successful extra point or field goal,” Savich said.
Further clarifying how there are many ways to be a good teammate, Savich describes the importance of unity and encouragement in football. He highlights the key factor for a good performance on the field which is the importance of an uplifting team full of players who never fail to encourage you.
“Having a supportive and hardworking team like North really enhances everyone’s performance and allows friendships to be made on and off the field,” Savich said. “The key character traits that contribute to a good team include dedication, accountability, and a positive attitude, with everyone ready to give their best every day.”
