Keeping it brief: five things to know for the week of  Jan. 8-14

  1. Michigan and other states’ Macy’s stores to close

Macy’s announced that it would close 11 stores throughout 2018, including one at Birchwood Mall, located near Port Huron. While saving money through this, the chain can now focus more attention to its online store. For more information on the chain’s dwindling number of brick-and-mortar stores, click here.

       2. Link Crew freshman study session

Link Crew will be providing an opportunity for freshmen to receive help with any questions related to the upcoming midterms in a study session Jan. 10 at 3:05 p.m. in the Commons.

      3. Discussion on immigration at Camp David

President Trump met with his Cabinet members and Republican congressmen Jan. 7 to discuss a variety of issues, including immigration. Regarding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), the president said that he would like to keep the act, however continues with the plan of a border wall.

      4. Former NASA astronaut died

Former astronaut John Young died Jan. 5. Throughout his time at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), he flew into space on six occasions, retiring in 2004 after beginning his work for the agency in 1962. For more information on Young’s life, click here.

       5. Oil tanker burned off of Chinese coast

All members of a ship off of the coast of China were saved after colliding with an oil tanker. As oil burns out of the 136,000-ton shipment, the search continues for the tanker’s crew.
