Keeping it brief: five things to know for the week of Jan. 11-17

1. State of the Union to be delivered

President Barack Obama is set to deliver his eighth and final State of the Union address to Congress on Tuesday. This address comes a week after President Obama announced his plan to bypass Congress to expand gun control. Likely topics of this speech are immigration, Guantanamo Bay, carbon dioxide emissions and re-establishing a relationship with Cuba. Read more here.

2. Golden Globes occurred

The seventy-third annual Golden Globe awards commenced in Los Angeles on Sunday. The Golden Globes kick-off the 2016 award season. Big winners for film were The Revenant and The Martian. Streaming services dominated the TV categories with shows like Orange is the New Black from Netflix and Mozart in the Jungle from Amazon. 3. El Chapo caught

Infamous Mexican drug lord Joaquín Guzmán Loera, better known as El Chapo, was caught after breaking out of a Mexican prison six months ago. This was El Chapo’s second time escaping from prison, the first being in 2001. It is possible that he will be extradited to the U.S. For more information, check out this New York Times article.

4. Possible L.A. football team

The St. Louis Rams, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders compete to relocate to Los Angeles. One or two teams will be allowed to move, but before doing so will need 24 votes from franchise owners. The owners will meet Tuesday and Wednesday in Houston. Read more on the NFL’s website.

5. Powerball at a record high

With no winner yet, the Powerball increases to a prize of $1.33 billion. According to the Multi-State Lottery Association, there is a one in 292.2 million chance of winning the jackpot.
