Keeping it brief: five things to know for the week of Feb. 28-March 5
March 1, 2016
1. Breaking down the Oscars
During a night featuring ball gowns and velvet tuxedos as some of the main events, Chris Rock delivered a fair share of jokes about the lack of diversity surrounding the award show. Movies like The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road picked up multiple awards, while Spotlight received best picture. Leonardo Dicaprio won his first Oscar for best actor while Brie Larson won best actress. You can read more about the Oscars here.
2. Trump comments over KKK bring disapproval
Trump blamed his earpiece for avoiding questions about the Ku Klux Klan on Sunday. Trump stated he doesn’t know enough about David Duke to judge how he feels about him. The quotes from Trump caused a stir, even from his own endorsers. Presidential candidate Marco Rubio was quick to call out Trump, calling him a “con artist” and a “scam.” You can read more about the story here.
3. Tragedy strikes in China
On Monday morning in Haikou, a southern province in China, a man stabbed 10 school children and then killed himself. None of the children were killed, but each student was wounded and taken to the hospital. China has seen other school incidents similar to this in past years. You can read more about this story here.
4. Corrections officer pleads guilty in New York
Gene Palmer, a corrections officer in New York, was found guilty of giving tools to a group of inmates who escaped. Both inmates were shot resulting in one death. The court ruled that Palmer will serve 6 months in prison and pay $5,375 in fees. Palmer supplied a screw driver, needle-nose pliers, paint supplies and frozen hamburger meat that contained hacksaw blades. You can read the full story here.
5. Golden State Warrior’s road to success pays off
The Warriors are on their way to the playoffs, thanks to the one man: Stephen Curry. Curry managed to make 288 3-pointers in the current season. Saturday night brought close calls against Oklahoma City but Curry shot the winning basket. Curry is being compared to other famous players like Magic Johnson, LeBron James, and Michael Jordan. The only difference is his height (6’3) and his ability to shoot far from the basket. The basketball player managed to place his team so far ahead that even if the Warriors lost the next 24 games, they would still be in the playoffs. Read more about the story here.
