Hearing Heathers: musical adaption doesn’t disappoint

By Alex Harring, Staff Reporter

Remember that movie about the group of elites? The one about Heather, Heather and Heather? It’s back and better than ever as an off-Broadway musical. The story is definitely memorable and the soundtrack proves it.

Heathers: The Musical features a wide range of songs. It’s full of diverse tunes and an array of styles that will always keep you interested. The product is outstanding, and will have you replaying the album over and over again.

The album was especially well-cast. All of the leads have strong voices that put character into the show’s catchy lyrics. Barrett Wilbert Weed, Ryan McMartan and Elle McLemore carry the album with their solo pieces and lead the ensemble in full company pieces.

Heathers, after multiple casting calls, workshops and experiments, is now a world-renown musical with a cast album as a key part of the success. Its lyrics prove that research has been done to make the album fit the 80s time period and is a testament to the classic high school clichés—the mean girls, the geeks and the jocks. These key factors make the album a favorite among many theatre fanatics and high school students alike.

The album is strong, with the exception of the “reprises.” These pieces are repetitive and echo the original numbers too much, and don’t add anything new to the soundtrack. They will leave you tired of the lyrics and skipping to the next song.

Overall, the Heathers soundtrack is a fantastic album, with only a few exceptions. Heathers is highly rated for its catchy numbers and strong leads. The movie Heathers is a cult favorite, and this album proves that Heathers: The Musical is here to stay.
