Girls swimming and diving

The girls’ swimming and diving team ended their regular season with a record of 3-6 with the MAC Red championship coming up this weekend. Their hard work at practice isn’t reflected in their record according to first-year head coach Dan Hafner.

“The girls worked really hard this year. I know it’s been different than in the past years, so I think that was the key,” Hafner said. “They were very competitive and wanted to get better.”

Being in the MAC Red comes with swimming against some of the top swimmers in that respective division, which pushes the girls to swim harder and get better, so they too, can compete on that level.

Sophomore Alyssa Carlino swims in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle and broke her goal of six minutes with a 5:55 in the freestyle. Although she had her personal goals, she knew that the team had a common goal of working and getting better together.

“We all communicated outside of swimming, and we were acting like friends instead of teammates, and we were all bonding together,” Carlino said.

Although they have a postseason race this weekend, Hafner has already keyed in on how the team could become better for next season and beyond.

“We need to get the girls involved in swimming more outside just the high school season,” Hafner said. “The only way to get better is to get into the water and actually do it, so hopefully we can convince more to do that.”
