Boys soccer

Coming into the season, a lot of the members of the boys soccer team didn’t have high expectations. Their main goal was to beat Grosse Pointe South both times they faced them. Despite tying and losing to South in the regular season, the team was able defeat them on their way to winning a district championship.

“My favorite moment was definitely winning the district championship. Either between that or beating South in the district semis,” senior Max Murray said. “Both of those things combined were really big.”

Coach Eric Vanston led the team to a 10-10-2 record during the regular season, and from the day he made cuts, he told his team that he wanted to improve over last season. They were determined to do so.

“The keys to achieving our goals came from the commitment of our players.  They bought into the hard work that we had to put in, and they learned to play as a team,” Vanston said. “Being a team, both on and off the field, was huge in reaching our goals.  This was a very tight-knit group of guys, and I think all the time they spent together off the field really helped them play together on the field.”

The team already is trying to build off the success they had this season. Their motivation lies in improving their regular season record, but also going further in the postseason.

“Looking forward to next season, I think we need to continue the hard work that we put in this season,” Vanston said. “Some of the guys have already talked about working out in the off-season, and I think dedication to improvement in the off season is really what will help us get better for next year.”
