The Legend of Zelda is one of the most popular video game franchises around, so it was inevitable that Nintendo would release a new entry in the series for their new handheld system, the 3DS.

A Link Between Worlds is a direct sequel to A Link to the Past, the third Zelda game, and is designed in the same top-down style as the old games. The story is pretty much the same as every Zelda game: someone kidnaps Princess Zelda and tries to take over the world. However, this game features a new ability where you can merge into a wall as a new way of solving some problems.

All the dungeons are well-designed and challenging, but not punishingly difficult. All the puzzles are clever, but not really challenging in a large way if you’re paying attention. The merging mechanic fits into the gameplay well and never hinders you, only adds to your abilities and can present some clever new solutions to old problems.

The one issue is that instead of acquiring items in dungeons, like in previous games, they now must be rented from a shop, All items are immediately available with no indication what is needed next, so a player can either guess what items are needed for the next dungeon or can rent them all and be a little over-powered.

A Link Between Worlds is an absolute blast to play. It keeps the same basic features as the old games, but has enough new elements to make it different. Fans of the old-style Zelda games will absolutely love A Link Between Worlds.
