Thirteen of the 18 members of the North-South combined gymnastics team went to regionals on Saturday, March 1. Eight teams participated.

The girls from North are freshmen Chandler Mcclarty and Isabelle Nyguen, sophomores Michelle Ellis and Jennifer Gmeiner, junior Maria Nyguen and seniors Samantha Rogers, Amy Olson, Cait Gaitley and Meagan Curran. Isabelle and Maria Nyguen performed in Division 1.

The team placed third at regionals, giving them the opportunity to go to states. They ranked fourth in the state during the season.

“We’ve been practicing routines. We’ve been practicing all of our events, and we’ve had a lot of assignments,” Jennifer Gmeiner said.

In addition to practicing, the team shows camaraderie by cheering for and encouraging each other and participating in team activities together.

“We have pasta parties, and we make crafts and stuff together before meets. We make posters and things like that. All this week we have little contests that we do. We have what we call beam madness, kind of like March Madness, to get us ready for our beam competition,” assistant coach Holly Abessinio said.

Senior Meagan Curran went to regionals for the third time and remembers her past experiences.

“There are amazing gymnasts from all over the state, so it’s really competitive,” Curran said. “It‘s kind of intimidating, but it’s a lot of fun.”
