The boys varsity hockey team took an eight-hour bus ride this past weekend to play in Marquette, Michigan. The boys played two games against Marquette High School and proved their abilities, as this was their first win of the season.

“We won both games. The first game was 6-3, the second ended 2-1 after we scored two unanswered goals with four minutes to go,” senior Will Zinn said.

These games helped the team bond and build chemistry.

“The experience for the team was great. It brought us together, and we really had a good time,” Zinn said. “The trip is always a good time, and it was nice to win both games.”

Underclassmen players who are new to the team this year also felt the team getting closer.

“The whole Marquette tournament has brought us closer together like a family,” sophomore JP Navetta said.

Adding to the excitement of the team’s wins, the boys have a tradition to shave underclassmen players’ hair during their weekend up north.

“The head shaving is a tradition that’s been going on forever,” Zinn said. “All the rookies get their heads shaved in weird and funny ways as a type of initiation to be apart of the team. It’s team unity and harmless fun.”

Sophomore Andrew Tomasi said he was looking forward to the head shaving but isn’t too excited about keeping the goofy hairstyle to wear to school. Navetta was excited as well.

“The tournament was one of the best experiences of my life,” Navetta said. “I’m already looking forward to next year’s tourney, and I can’t wait to cut rookies’ hair.”

These games also served as preparation for the North vs. South game tonight. The two wins added to the team’s positive attitudes.

“It built chemistry for later in the season leading into the North/South rivalry,” Tomasi said.

“We finally felt what it feels like to win, and it felt great,” Navetta said.
